Mathematics

Mathematics is the study of numbers, quantity, structure, space and change.

Mathematics leads to the Bachelor of Mathematical Science, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Engineering and other related degrees including economics and finance. It is considered an important subject for most trade courses and the armed forces.

Numeracy (10 credits) will be a co-requisite from 2024. Numeracy standards will be externally assessed, and students will need to pass them in order to be awarded any level of NCEA qualification. To accommodate the diverse needs of our learners, the Mathematics Department will provide two course options: MAT100 - Academic and MAT100A - Applied, allowing students to align their studies with their career pathways. All students are required to successfully complete Numeracy co-requisite from 2024 so they can gain both NCEA Level One and University Entrance numeracy.

Prerequisites into Level Two and Three depend upon results in internal and external assessments the previous year and certain achievement standards may be needed prior to entry to some courses.

Prerequisites into Calculus are Merit and above in both Level 2 Algebra and Level 2 Calculus.
