Course Description
Level Three English Literature
The main focus in this course is on written texts and the extension of literacy skills through reading, writing, speaking and viewing in a range of contexts. As well as completing their internal assessments, students who take this course will be expected to sit two external assessments.
Students who select this course will:
Develop their academic writing skills and extend their responses to film, to formulate discerning arguments and evaluative commentaries. discerning arguments and evaluative commentaries.
Write in a range of styles, developing their essay writing skills and producing a portfolio of writing.
Develop their knowledge and understanding of the literary, social and cultural contexts of texts through directed and independent reading of literature and literary criticism.
Develop an informed understanding of literature and/or language using critical texts as a lens through which to view the source text. Previous source texts have been the films Mad Max: Fury Road, Lady Bird, and Blue Valentine.
Course Overview
Term 1
AS91480 Respond critically to significant aspects of visual and/or oral text(s) through close reading, supported by evidence (3 credits)
-students study the films of a significant director, and complete an essay where aspects of the director's signature style are identified in relation to a theme in the film.
Previous directors include Greta Gerwig, George Miller, Stanley Kubrick.
Term 2
AS91479 English Develop an informed understanding of literature and/or language using critical texts 4 credits
Term 3
AS91475 Produce a selection of fluent and coherent writing which develops, sustains, and structures ideas. (6 credits)
OPTIONAL
91476 Create and deliver a fluent and coherent oral text which develops, sustains, and structures ideas. (3 credits)
Term 4
AS91474 Respond critically to significant aspects of unfamiliar written texts through close reading, supported by evidence. (4 credits, External exam)

Prerequisites: M or E across at least THREE Level 2 internals AND at least one external standard, OR HoD approval.
